LUNA'S LOVES

If it isn't obvious at this point that I love skincare, then I'm not sure I'm doing it right. For the past month I have had the privilege of trying Y'OUR Skincare exclusively to test out how they work. My skin wasn't the worst its has been like I previously blogged about on here. . I honestly just got a little lazy and on top of everything leveling out my hormones since being post partum. Overall, good skin- just really clogged pored. Plus, my skin texture wasn't as smooth as I wanted it nor was it where it had been when I worked really hard to eliminate what was causing my cystic acne. So no acne, but clogged pores. I can work with that. With Y'OUR, it's gets to know you personally by a short quiz to understand your skin care wants and problems. Which, I looove because I can get a whole routine without having to formulate one on my own. They basically give me all the steps to be successful.
So down to the real stuff, is it worth it? I think so. Here's the breakdown: simple, delivered to your door, and it formulated just for you (need I say more!!). The one step I wish I had was exfoliation. I started to slip back into bad picking habits (oops).
Unfortunately, I don't have before photos but what I can say is yes my skin is better. Some of the clogged pores either need to be extracted by a professional or I will continue to add exfoliation separately. But what I loved about Y'OUR Skin is that my skin looked hydrated and clear by the end of my trial. Please don't take my word for it, try it yourself, See if it works for you and your skin journey!

I bet many of you don't remember the time I had purple hair for about 6 months. If I knew then that I know now, I would do things way differently. In the process, I fried my hair and it took a while to get it to where it used to be. I think hair should be fun and an expression, also, hair grows back! So don't be afraid to shake it up a bit. I got an opportunity to try Overtone's for brown hair line so that brunettes can try color too without all of the damage. Overall, I loved the ease of this product with my hair. The coloring system is easy: just apply to dry hair and wash away with hot water 10-15 minutes later. No extreme bleaching or harsh chemicals. It is a vegan, cruelty-free product too! The smell is almost like the love child of spearmint and rosemary. It's pretty refreshing.
Here are my before and after shots. Of course, my highlights took to it immediately. but the rest of my har has a subtle rose gold color. This shade has a lot of warmth to it, which complimented my olive complexion. Because I previously had highlights to my hair, I diluted the front pieces with a hair mask that I already had on hand. Then after I washed my hair out, I put purple shampoo on my front pieces and washed again to give it more of a pastel look.If you are a blonde, you can easily use their colorless hair treatment to achieve a pastel look. Overtone is a highly pigmented product, so a little goes a loooong way.
If you want to try out out Overtone's Rose Gold for Brown hair - I'm giving one away! All you have to do is:
1. Like this instagram post
2. Tag a friend you'd think also enjoy it
3. BONUS! subscribe to my blog

Giveaway ends February 24th.

This last year has been quite the journey when it came to my skin. My skin wasn't a big thing I ever had to worry about too much. Ever since I had my daughter, my body seemed to be going through many changes and my skins just one of the things I had to get used to. It first started with my forehead. It was like these tiny flesh colored bumps were taking over, and not that anybody would have noticed, but I sure did. What they probably did noticed was the constant picking aftermath that I caused on my face. So I started my research and over washing and over exfoliating which caused my skin to freeaaaakk. Like seriously freak, which I show in my photos below. The over washing, over exfoliating, and obsessive picking (any other pickers out there?! We should start a club.) caused my skin to hard have crazy cystic acne and more flesh colored bumps and now there is scarring.

The thing about acne that no one tells you is that it effects your confidence. I didn't feel like myself and I knew that stacking more makeup was only making things worse (on top of the other bad habits I had created). So I decided to revaluate what I was doing. Here is how I got my skin back on track. I hope this can also help you too on your own skin journey!

1. I added primrose evening oil to my daily mix of vitamins. Primrose oil helps level out hormones and can help with side effects that come with PMS, endometriosis, and psoriasis. I noticed my cystic acne would be less frequent especially if it was that time of the month.

2. I streamlined my skincare routine. I had the philosophy that if a little was good, more was better. and boy was I WRONG. Wrong, wrong wrong. I was over exfoliating my face and using too harsh of chemicals that striping away my moisture barrier and making me more likely to have breakouts. I finally gave in and bought Curology, and I really think it help jumpstart my skins recovery. Seriously will never go back. After my skin started clearing up, I slowly added other products but I am now extremely picky what I put on my body.
Here are a few items that I love right now:
  • Murad Night Fix
  • Curology (of course- cannot recommend enough!! Their first bottle is FREE)
  • Murad Youth Renewal Night Cream
  • Murad Youth Renewal Serum

3. I journaled what I ate. I had recently made the switch to do less meat, so to substitute meat I would regularly eat tofu. Tofu and soy contain phytoestrogens. I cut out the amount of tofu I was intaking, not that it is all bad, but at the rate I was going it was having an affect on my skin.

4. I started getting facials regularly. I was desperate to get my skin back on track, so I started getting facials and was able to get treatments I wouldn't normally get at home. The treatments that I really love are dermaplaning and LED light therapy, not to mention just the pure facts of getting pampered once a month was totally worth it.

Now my journey isn't over. I still get an occasional pimple and sometimes pick when I feel insecure and I am for sure am not eating right now that I am pregnant with baby number 2. However, I now have the tools I need for skin to thrive. My skin is practically glowing in the last photo and I couldn't be more proud of the hard work! So if you are like me in the first photo, keep going (and also maybe no picking)!

Have you heard of the hemp oil craze? It's like the new coconut oil but better! It also turns out that it is beneficial to helping hormonal acne, it has skin benefits, and other benefits. It's important to get 100% pure organic hemp oil. My favorite is Hempvana. use code UNLOCK10 to get 10% off your order. Because hemp oil is generally newer to the market, most people don't know how to use hemp oil. So to help you out here are some uses for hemp oil.

    1. Make up Remover-
In the past people have used coconut oil for this, but coconut oil is actually comedogenic. This just means that it clogs your pores and causes more breakouts. Hemp oil is non-comedogenic, it rates a zero out of 5 on the scale. In fact, it helps skin by unclogging pores and prevents break outs by balancing sebum production, which is commonly found in hormonal acne.

    2. Skin & Hair Moisturizer-
Applying hemp oil helps relieve problems like dryness and eczema. It is actually considered a 'dry oil' so instead of making you feel oily it acts more like an astringent. Hemp oil helps to condition the skin and strengthens it to become more resistant to infections. Try this recipe for a skin or hair moisturizer!
  • 1 tbs argan oil
  • 1 tbs hemp oil
  • 6 drops lavender oil
  • 6 drops tea tree oil
   3.  Eat it-
Hempvana Hemp Oil blends the perfect combo of Omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. It is flavorful with notes of an earthy, nutty taste. It's not recommended to heat hemp oil. When it is cooked it smokes, which causes most of the nutrients to deplete. Instead experiment by adding it to your favorite recipes like salads, dressings, hummus, protein shakes, pesto, or cold soups.

I'm always trying to find way to heal my body from the outside in and I'm obsessed with nutrition that has additional beauty benefits. I even listed some of my favorite wellness and beauty books. You can benefit from all my obsessive hours of deep diving into beauty and nutrition. This particular recipe is an adaption from Bobbi Brown Beauty. I love this recipe because it is completely customizable for your liking or for what you have in the fridge! As well as being delicious, each ingredient has an added bonus of beauty benefits that will help you towards your beauty goals. Hope you enjoy!
Ingredients (Serves 1):
  • 1/2 of a Sweet Potato, roasted
  • Handful of Arugula
  • 1/2 cup of Cherry Tomato
  • 1/2 of a Avocado
  • 1/4 cup of Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1/2 cup of Lentils, cooked
  • 1/3 cup of Red Cabbage, chopped
  • Spoonful of desired Humus (optional)
  • Tahini Dressing (recipe below)
Tahini Dressing:
  • 1/4 cup of Tahini
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Soy sauce, as desired
  • Siracha, as desired
  • 1 tsp ginger

Beauty Benefits:
  • Sweet Potato- Skins best friend! Sweet potato contain vitamin A which help repair and smooth skin. Just 1 cup contains 769 percent of your daily need of vitamin A.  SEVEN HUNDRED SIXTY-NINE PERCENT. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin C, B, B6.
  • Arugula- Anti-aging protection! Arugula is another friend for your skin because it contains phytochemicals that lower inflammation, protect cells from DNA damage, and reduce skin redness from the sun.
  • Tomato- This is a natural Sun defender! Tomatoes contain the nutrients Lycopene, beta-carotene, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C which help aid in defending against UV damage. If you cook them or pour a little olive oil, you can help increase the Lycopene absorption. Lycopene is an antioxidant that helps aid in defending against sun damage, it improves heart health, and can also lower risk of certain types of cancer.
  • Avocado- Beauty boost! Avocados burn easily for energy and fire up the natural detox process of the liver, which help skin stay clear. They are a natural fat, so only half an avocado would be sufficient, but honestly who would do that?
  • Pumpkin Seeds- Say helloooo to great skin! Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc which help fight breakouts- specifically propionibacterium acne. If you suffer from acne consider putting zinc into your diet. They also help collagen production, and who doesn't need more collagen?! "Pumpkin seeds contain nutrients like omega-3s, vitamin A, B, and K and minerals niacin, magnesium, iron, and copper."
  • Red Cabbage- The more collagen, the better! Red cabbage contains twice the amount of vitamin C than green cabbage, which help builds collagen. It also contains fiber, vitamin K, vitamin B6, and silicon, which helps your hair and nails against breakage.
  • Lentils- Under appreciated  legume. Lentils support cellular repair because of their blood sugar  stabilizing ability. This is key for healthy, wrinkle-free, clear skin.
  • Tahini- Calm nerves and clear skin! Tahini contains zinc, which we have learned previously helps aid in getting clear skin. An added bonus is the vitamin B, which helps relieve stress.

Beauty again? Yes. Because for me it's a constant process. Cameron Diaz has a quote in one of her books that resonates with me so deeply. She says, "Diet is about deprivation, nutrition is about abundance." I made a list of some of my favorite nutrition products that I have added to my daily routine. Caring for yourself doesn't have to be this hard, complicated thing. The problem I see people have is a lack of knowledge of what they are consuming or maybe even what they could be benefiting from by adding a few simple items to their grocery list.

Turmeric
I have been adding tuner to my daily vitamin routine. Turmeric is a natural decongestant, anti-inflammatory, and is great to help treat clear skin. The reason that I started adding it to my routine, was because I wanted to detox my liver and try to reduce bloat. So far, I am happy with the results.

How to use it? Use it in an exfoliator, food, or simply take turmeric capsules.

Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV is one of those multi-use items. I could try to list them all, but I think we would be here for a long time. I'm currently taking ACV shots with lemon each morning to get my metabolism going and detox the body. It also helps against candida- those little bumps that appear on your skin caused by over production of yeast. There are skin benefits, digestion, weight loss, and much more! Just look it up!

How to use it? As a facial toner, to clean your produce, for stubborn smells, for your hair, or even sunburns.

Maca
Maca is a great antioxidant superfood that helps increase energy. I put a little in my coffee each morning and I immediately noticed a difference when I started adding it to my routine.  It has a nutty taste and can be added to different food recipes. Maca improves your immune system, helps build muscle strength, and supports healthy hormone production as well as a variety of other benefits.

How to use it? Add to smoothies, coffee, dietary supplements or food recipes.

Coconut Oil
As well as added Maca to my coffee, I also add coconut oil. Coconut oil is one of those good fats that is extremely beneficial for you. It burns quickly in the body and provides energy and boots metabolism. Coconut oil also boots the absorption of other nutrients, so try it with smoothies! But a little goes a long way, so don't go crazy with this one.

How to use it? To cook with, coffee,  or smoothies.

Cacao powder
Not to be confused wit Cocoa powder. Very different. Cacao powder is a superfood and I am down for any super food that helps with beauty. This superfood has a high concentration of antioxidants that help prevent aging by blocking the formation of wrinkles and also protects against UV damage. When you eat cacao, your brain releases serotonin and endorphins which are the  the "feel-good" chemicals that help elevate stress or anxiety. These are the same chemicals that are released when you work out

How to use it? Make smoothies, energy snacks, or add it in your oatmeal.

I could sit here and talk about how to eat healthy or my favorite makeup routines or fashion, but if I don't honestly feel beautiful then those things are just bandaids to a major problem. I remember watching a dove campaign a few years back where several women had to describe themselves to a sketch artists and they also had someone else who had only met them once describe themselves. The results were shocking. When woman saw the result that they gave the sketch artist, they looked mean, unhappy, bigger noses, or harsher features. However, when the the total stranger described them, the sketch results came back more positive. The women had kind eyes, sweet feature, and were overall prettier. It's funny thing when someone captures what we actually think of ourselves. You can watch that video HERE.
As it turns out, we really are what we think. This is a process that take continual mastering. Just when I think I've got a handle on it, a lie tries to come in and grow. The outcome of negative self talk can result in depression or anxiety. If we don't learn how to manage our thought life, we will live in constant turmoil within ourselves. You can really only benefit from loving yourself better. It helps build confidence, it can reduce stress and anxiety, and produce an overall self-love for yourself! Here are two things that helped me:

  1. Stop comparing, it's only hurting you. Comparison is unfair.
  2. Speak love over yourself. As soon as an negative thought comes in, speak the opposite over yourself out loud. This may seem silly at first, but your words carry power.
I hope that you begin to see the beauty that other see in you!

I've been loving my Function of Beauty Shampoo and Conditioner and I simply wanted to share what I think so it so far! I've got several questions from people wondering how I liked it, so I figured I would just make a blog post about it. When I first checked out Function of Beauty, I immediately fell in love with the concept and design. Seriously so many heart eyes. The customizable quality of Function allows me to add what I wanted in a shampoo and conditioner. From deep conditioning to strengthening to hydration. There are literally any number of combinations to choose from, because i get to pick my five most desired functions of my personal shampoo. Then, on top of all of that I get to choose my scent and color! I ended up going to essential oils route with a purple dye (because of my blonde baylage).
When I ordered my two bottles, I realized I ordered too small of sizes. So I had to contact consumer service and cancel my order. A total ditz moment on my part, but I can now say that they were sooo helpful and kind! They even made sure I would get it on the day I was expecting from my original order. My box arrived in its beautiful package with my name printed and I have subscribed to their service and will receive my next shipment in 6 months! How awesome is that?! Function of Beauty is changing the shampoo game! I'm sold.
