LUNA'S LOVES

Sometimes I wonder how mothers do it all. I remember the first couple of times that I went out with Ryan-Kate, which was, of course, Target. It seemed back then that getting out of the house was our biggest goal. I didn't want to be the person who didn't have a life just because a baby came along. My biggest fear was that she was going to need something and I wasn't going to have it.
A diaper.
A Bottle.
A burp cloth.
It all seemed so overwhelming then.
I now know to have more grace on myself. My attention is split and my capacity is no longer that of a single person. Which, on a side note, if you are not married and have no kids- don't waste your time just doing nothing. I am so envious of your time! Seek out your dreams, travel, explore new places, just live. And that't not to say that I'm not enjoying my life now, but it is different.
All that to say: be present, wherever you are. It is so easy to wish you were in a different season or on to the next thing. However, if you are constantly wishing for the "next step" you will miss on the wonderful opportunities that are happening right now!

I have always admired the French art of beauty. There is something about French women that is so effortless, and I have adopted their same approach to beauty: take care of the "base." Skin care is about what you put in your body just as much as it is about what you put on it; however, that is another conversation for another time.
Now, I have never been one to wear tons of makeup so through the years I have just had to find products that work for me. I posted a photo on Instagram not too long ago and I got responses asking what I am using for skin care. I decided that it would be a great opportunity to sum up my routine in a post and talk about my favorite products.

  1. Josie Maran - This one is hard because I own several products from Josie Maran. In Texas, my skin was oily, but over the years, the colorado climate has dried it out. I like use the the Argan oil to hydrate my face before I got to bed and in the morning as a part of my makeup routine. Other products that I would recommend from Josie are the Argan Cleansing Oil and Argan Milk Hydrating Treatment.
  2. Tea Tree Oil- I use this whenever I have a nasty pimple. I just put a little on a q-tip and apply to the problem area. It is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
  3. ProActiv Toner- I recently started using toner on my face every morning and every night and I have noticed a major difference on how clear my face looks. ProActiv did wonders to my skin about 4 years ago (I sound like an infomercial), but now I only really use the toner. I'm not sure, but I'm convinced any toner is will do.
  4. Boscia Clear Complexion Treatment- or simply put, pimple treatment
  5. Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen- I apply sunscreen to my face everyday. The sun is so intense in Colorado that I can't really afford not to.
  6. Olay Regenerist Night Cream- This is one that I have been using for years and its one of the best nighttime creams that I have found.

What are you using? I would love to know. I am always looking for new products! Until then, I hope this help you along with your own skin journey.

There are a few things, in my opinion, that people either under sold or oversold about being a mother. No one can prepare you for the love you will have for your child or how exhausted you will become  or how overwhelmed this new season that you are about to step into will be. Breastfeeding was and is one of those oversold/undersold experiences.
So lets talk candidly, shall we?
My milk came so fast, that my poor breast still have stretch marks. The first TWO weeks of breastfeeding, my nipples were so raw and tender that every time Ryan-Kate would eat, I would curl my toes to try to escape the pain. Crying, because I felt like I was in over my head.
But then it got better and beautiful and I loved it.
I was producing so much milk that I thought there was no way I could ever run out. Secretly and ashamedly, I felt superior to moms who maybe couldn't do it. I felt like a champion, even though I sometimes hated the interruption in the day and how uncomfortable I felt when my milk came in. I didn't know how to stand or cross my arms. I was self-conscious that everyone would be staring or that my boobs would start leaking suddenly (which they did on several occasions).
Then, maybe I stressed or when I started giving RK pumped milk more and that's what started it, but my milk supply started to decrease. Which got me more stressed, which caused me to go into a depression.
I felt like such a failure. Producing milk is something that my body is supposed to do as a mother, and I couldn't give that to her like I used to in the beginning. I would cry thinking of the lectures people would give me or the "mommy shame" that I would receive. Formula is a stress reliever and a mommy guilt trip, but it gave me the sanity that I needed.
Ryan-Kate wasn't taking to me as easily anymore and all I could think was, "Not yet. I thought I had more time. We can't be finished with this yet."
You see, this was the moment I realized that I actually loved breastfeeding her. I had no idea it would be that wonderful or that hard. Like extremely hard.
Now, I can only pump 2 ounces or less a night. I've tried everything and I'm still not giving up. I silently long for the days when it was just me and my baby girl. For now, I will give her everything that I have until it's all gone.
Many mothers are on my same boat and I just want to applaud you guys. You are a doing great job. It doesn't matter if you breastfeed or formula feed. The best thing you can give your child is love. It only matters that you are there for your baby. So, give yourself some grace. You are a wonderful mother.

I'm just going to get right into it and introduce you to my latest obsession.
Bahn Mi.
It is a delicious Vietnamese dish that is served on a french baguette, with sweet pickled cucumber, daikon, and carrot, but spicy because of the siracha mayo and jalepeno. Trying new foods is like a hobby for us. So when I kept seeing Bahn Mi in different food shows that I like, I thought, "Hm, I bet we would like that."
Sure enough, we haven't stopped eating it.
We decided to go to a legit Vietnamese place to make sure we were getting our flavors right before we attempted to make the dish. Then after we made it, I think ours is WAY better. it does require some chopping which is not my favorite, especially when the veggies are needing to be specifically chopped a certain way (insert eye roll emoji).
What You Need:
  • Chicken Marinade
    • Garlic
    • Soy Sauce
    • Mayo
    • Fish Sauce
  • Pickled Veggies
    • Daikon (I found it at Sprouts!)
    • Carrot
    • Cucumber
  • French Baguette
  • Sriracha or Sriracha Mayo
  • Mayo
  • Cucumber
  • Jalepeno (for garnish)
  • Cilantro  (for garnish)

 Instructions

  1. Chicken- Combine all ingredient and let marinade for at least 30 min
  2. Pickled veggies- 1/4 lb. cucumber, julienned

    • 1 lb. daikon, peeled and julienned
    • 1 lb. carrots, peeled and julienned
    • 2 tsps kosher or sea salt
    • 1 cup unseasoned rice vinegar
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 cup water
Pat vegetables dry. Combine the vinegar, salt, sugar, and water together until the sugar dissolves. Place the vegetables in a jar large enough to fit them all and pour the pickling liquid into the jar so that all of the vegetables are submerged. Store them sealed in the jar for at least an hour.

    3.  Assemble sandwich-
  • Cook the chicken on a grill until cooked through. Then slice.
  • Toast the baguettes, spread mayonnaise  and/or Sriracha mayo and top with chicken slices, pickled vegetables, cilantro leaves, and jalapeño slices. Serve warm.
